The Wimberley area offers activities outside shopping and eating (though, those are fun here, too). For road cyclists, we have dozens of miles of relatively lightly traveled backroads, with enough climbs to rack up a few thousand feet in a 35-mile route. The new mountain bike trails on Michaelis Ranch will soon open just outside of town, but until then there are beginner trails at Pedernales Falls State Park on the other side of Dripping Springs; numerous parks with trails in Austin; and just over an hour away at Rocky Hill Ranch, nearly 40 miles of beginner to expert trails open seven days a week. Hiking is also available at Pedernales Falls and in Austin's city parks, with miles of trails in Lost Maples (2.5 hours away) and Bastrop State Parks (1.5 hours away). Kayaking is available on the Blanco River, though access is limited by the mostly privately owned river banks. Access is still available, though, and I'm more than happy to work with you to design a trip of just a few hours or a day. Nearby Canyon Lake, and the not-so-distant Inks Lake, are wonderfully diverse motorized and non-motorized boating destinations. Inks Lake also provides excellent camping, swimming, fishing facilities, with even some small cabins for rent in the park. The great thing about central Texas is that it's central, and so many of the things outdoors people like to do are often closer than from, say, Houston to Big Bend, or, Dallas to the beach. Where Big Bend NP is 11 hours from Corpus, it's less than 7 from Wimberley; to get to Rocky Hill Ranch to mountain bike from Dallas is five hours, and just one-and-a-half from here. This is why we moved here, so the places we spent so many hours driving to get to from South Texas, became much more accessible--most especially where we live now, which was our primary destination all along. |
